After supper as a child, we would all gather on the front porch (in warmer months) or around the fireplace (during winter) and allow the instruments to sing. Daddy plucked the guitar and Papaw would alternate between the twang of his banjo or the haunting melody of the fiddle. Mama sang and I learned the art of spoons. Mamaw, still wearing her cooking apron, would bring us all a cup of this tea blend that she kept in her herb cabinet in an old mason jar. She always said that it and the music would help the supper settle and lead to a good night's sleep. That woman was never wrong.
